Writing as Witness
A Bay of Quinte Mohawk from Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory in Ontario, Beth Brant edited the ground-breaking first collection of writing and art by First Nation women of North America, A Gathering of Spirit (Firebrand Books/Women's Press). Her fiction includes Mohawk Trail, prose and poetry (Firebrand Books/Women's Press, 1985) and Food & Spirits (Firebrand Books/Press Gang, 1991). Her essay collection Writing as Witness; Essay and Talk (Women's Press) appeared in 1994, and the oral history, I'll Sing Til the Day I Die in 1996.
Beth Brant has read, lectured and taught throughout North America, including residencies at University of Toronto. Her writing has appeared in numerous First Nation, feminist and lesbian anthologies. A recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship, Beth Brant divides her time between living in Michigan and Canada. A grandmother, she has been writing since the age of forty and considers it a gift for her community.
